Book Tate: The Montana Marshalls - An Inspirational Romantic Suspense Family Series Review :

More a 4.5, Susan May Warren's latest Montana Marshalls adventure is as intriguing and romantic as its predecessor. Here, Tate and Glo star as the main couple while Ford and Scarlett are the betas, proving beyond any doubt Susie is adept at spinning a double romance. Getting back together with the Yankee Belles was a real treat, and same for the Marshall men. (How on earth did their mother cope with living in that houseful of gentlemanly rancher hunks)? :)It may sound cliché, but it's true. In this book, Gloria glows. She's courageous, intelligent, and most notably, selfless to a fault. Yet she never comes across as a goody-two-shoes. If anything, she struggles with faith and feeling wanted precisely because her selflessness seems to be the reason the most important people in her life want her around. Watching her journey is a pleasure but also makes you think. She's also multifaceted; not many characters, especially in Christian fiction, can glad-hand the political crowd, sing award-winning country songs, and ring true at both.As for Tate...whew, yes, please! He's swoon-worthy while keeping his boots on the ground and his character grounded in reality. I'm a "heroine," but could identify intimately with his desire to be the "hero" of the story for once. What I love about his character arc is how Susie made that work. You think this guy is already a hero--he served in Afghanistan and as an Army Ranger, hello! But Tate's not looking for that. He's looking for the "hero" title that marks him as God's man, a courageous man, and a man who can protect others. He gets all that not in spite of his past, but largely because of it. He's a great reminder that God can use and love anybody who is willing.Speaking of which, the spiritual arc shines, too. For me, it was nothing short of convicting, especially when Glo interacted with Gerri and wrestled with the question of what would happen if she let God love and show up for her. I think as Christians, we're so often taught--unintentionally, mostly--that God will show up for you when you *earn* it. The truth seems so contradictory in my head, every reminder is a fresh one. But this book makes me want to embrace it more.As for Ford and Scarlett, wow. I cannot wait for a whole book dedicated to these two. At times, they seemed more developed than Glo and Tate. I appreciated that most of their action wasn't military-centric, but delved into the personal, the home front, and their inner struggles. I loved their character quirks. For instance, thank you Susie, for giving us Scarlett, a military communications genius who still eats like a twelve-year-old. And thanks for letting her be feminine. If I saw one more perfectly tan, blonde, size-four military chick who could still bench-press 350, tote a 100-pound pack, and considered kale a dessert, I was gonna scream. In light of all this, I hate to take a star (and for goodness' sakes, why doesn't Amazon allow half stars)? But I have to be honest. Part of the half star is because Tate and Glo could use just a *little* more shading, as could Tate's experiences with the Bratva. I mean, Slava busts into the hotel room, he and Tate go at it, Slick Sloan makes a few comments about the past, and...poof. Where did it go?I'm also not completely on board with the character of Joy. I appreciate how Susie did a little something different with her, but in the end, she does have a disability, and she basically does die from it. We also don't know anything about her character, other than that she was "pure light." She's painted as perfect and favored, right up to when she tells Glo the angels are coming for her. And...I just cannot endorse that. I have CP myself, and I am not "pure light." Christian, yes. Pure light, no. I experience all emotions, I do great at some things and struggle with other things, and cerebral palsy does not, for me, mean a short life expectancy. I wish Susie had done with Joy what she has done with characters like Gabe Michaels, Isadora Pressley, and Caleb Knight--given her a disability without sacrificing depth and reality. Actually, I wish more authors did that, Christian and secular. I can sort of excuse it because this is Gloria's story, but then again--why isn't the person with the visible disability ever the hero/heroine?Okay, enough of that. Basically, all you need to know is, Susie wrote another hit, I'm salivating for the rest of the Marshall stories, and you need to check out this series. Susie covers everything from the country music stage to the Russian mafia with aplomb. I want to be like her when I "grow up" into multi-pubbed author status.
